She is a former Judge and Vice President of Section 1 of the European Court of Human Rights, where she served for 14 years, bringing extensive international expertise in complex human rights litigation and arbitration.
She has lectured at numerous prestigious law faculties worldwide and possesses an extensive academic background, including engagements at Stanford University, Hong Kong University, and the University of Vienna. As an accomplished international human rights lawyer, she played a pivotal role in co-negotiating the Washington Agreement, which established a legal framework for compensating crimes and injustices committed during the Second World War. Notably, she secured compensation for over 320,000 Ukrainian, Russian, and Belarusian forced laborers from the war era and achieved significant restitution for looted art.
Elisabeth Steiner also serves as Deputy President of the Appeals Arbitration Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and is a member of the governing board (ICAS), focusing on human rights issues.
